Where do you begin with Colt McCoy? In his three seasons, McCoy already holds 42 school records and boasts a 32-7 record as a starter. McCoy has completed 825 of 1,175 passes (70.2%) for 9,732 yards and 85 touchdowns against just 33 interceptions in his career. There are not many quarterback records at Texas that McCoy does not already own including single-season and career passing yards, single-season and career passing touchdowns, and single-season and career total offense. The 2009 season will just pad his records. The Heisman runner-up returns and looks to top 4,000 passing yards as a senior. McCoy who was the team’s leading rusher last year with 561 yards will likely see his rushing numbers decrease.
Key reserves: Sherrod Harris and Garrett Gilbert
With longtime back-up quarterback John Chiles’ move to wide receiver just before spring practice, the back-up quarterback position is certainly up for grabs. Junior Sherrod Harris out of Arlington Bowie certainly has logged more time on the Forty Acres than incoming freshman Garrett Gilbert, but after three seasons, Harris has only appeared in mop-up duty in three games. Harris is currently rehabbing a knee injury, so freshman Garrett Gilbert will get a very long look by the coaching staff. Gilbert, who moved to campus on Sunday, has done his best to prepare himself to hit the ground running as he made virtually every practice and quarterback meeting during the spring. The likelihood of a redshirt season for Gilbert seems very remote. The reality remains that if Colt McCoy goes down during the season that all of the Longhorn’s team goals are in jeopardy. The coaching staff will have to do quite the balancing act to provide both back-ups enough snaps to be prepared for the unthinkable and for the inevitable as McCoy will be playing on Sundays in 2010 at the risk of taking away some late game opportunities to pad McCoy’s Heisman resume.
2010 OutlookThe 2010 quarterback situation will have a very new look for Longhorns. Both reserves from the 2009 team will be back, but likely with very little meaningful game experience and probably zero starts. Current Longhorn verbal commitments Connor Wood and Colt’s younger brother Case McCoy will also add depth as true freshmen. It is possible that one of the true freshmen redshirts while the other plays as the team’s number three.
