Tale of the Tape: Iowa State
Week 5 in the college football season and the Texas Longhorns (2-2) travel to Ames, Iowa to take on the (1-3) Cyclones on Thursday Night. This provides an interesting matchup for the Longhorns for one particular reason, and that is the Cyclones are 7-2 on Thursday/Friday games. This is what Iowa State does…they make you come up to small town Ames, Iowa on a weeknight to play a game. Coach Rhoads seems to know how to motivate his players for these types of matchups. We all remember what happened to Oklahoma State a couple years ago. Even though there record doesn’t speak to it the Horns can’t afford to fall asleep against the Cyclones, they are well coached and they play tough at home. Coming off an open week this is the perfect scenario for a trap game for the Longhorns and looking ahead to two weeks at the Red River Rivalry.
Iowa State’s offense has been plagued by injuries all year especially on the offensive line. They are led by quarterback Sam Richardson who has been troubled with an ankle injury that he suffered against Northern Illinois in the first game of the season. They have a two-back committee that seems to be cruiser and a bruiser scenario. Their cruiser Aaron Wimberly seems to get the bulk of the load and is their big play runner, while Jeff Woody is their big snow plow of a back who will come in on goal line situations. Iowa state has some pieces but with their offensive line banged up and their quarterback Richardson operating on a bad wheel I suspect the Horns defense to be too fast for the Clones to get anything going.
The other interesting stat that gives Iowa State a chance in this game is that they are + 52 in pts off turnovers in Thursday/Friday Night games. If the Cyclones defense can somehow a few takeaways, it will be the perfect storm for this hobbled offense to spark up some momentum and possibly sneak out a win. This Rhoads defense isn’t the same as years past in that they lost a key player in the middle but this game all lies on whether or not the Horns can protect the rock. Plain in simple if they turn it over this game will be close, if they don’t this game will be as expected..a WIN.
Take the Horns +9
