MANHATTAN, KANSAS---It was right there. Chaos, just waiting to happen.
Last night, Kent State was on the precipice of creating a brand new form of BCS chaos. To make sure that I truly understood that this was indeed a precipice, I looked up the definition:
prec·i·pice
noun
1.
a cliff with a vertical, nearly vertical, or overhanging face.
2.
a situation of great peril: " on the precipice of war."
In the case of the BCS, and more specifically, the Orange Bowl, it was indeed "a situation of great peril (although "on the precipice of war" might be going a little too far). Nevertheless, a win by Kent State last night in the MAC Championship Game might have truly upset the BCS balance of power--in other words, a "non-AQ" (non-automatic qualifier) school earning a BCS bowl berth. Kent State, at #17 in the BCS standings, needed to finish ranked in the top 16 and ahead of a conference champion from a BCS-affiliated conference. That part had already taken care of itself--there are no teams from the Big East even ranked in the BCS standings, and while Louisville, which staked its claim to the title and the Big East BCS bid with its come-from-behind win at Rutgers on Thursday night will almost certainly be ranked when the final BCS standings are released tomorrow evening, Kent State still would have been ranked ahead of the Cardinals. Part Two of the equation--UCLA losing at Stanford in the Pac 12 title game last night in Palo Alto--also would have fallen into place. Stanford's 27-24 hard-fought win put the other piece in place. All Kent State had to do was beat Northern Illinois. That was not expected to be easy--NIU was favored by a touchdown--but the Golden Flashes had an early 10-0 lead, then after rallying back from a 27-13 fourth-quarter deficit, seemed to have the momentum going into overtime. But the Huskies prevailed in the second overtime session to win it, 44-37, and unless Northern Illinois makes what would be as historic a climb for a non-AQ school in the BCS standings from 21 to 16 as it appears unlikely, the stage is set for the big boys to take over the at-large pool once again.
Going into today, Oklahoma was in the drivers' seat to claim that one remaining at-large spot. Win at TCU, and the Sooners are almost certain to earn a BCS spot. If Kansas State defeats Texas tonight here in Manhattan, the Wildcats win the Big 12 Conference's automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl. A Texas win, however, clouds the picture. A Longhorns' victory coupled with an Oklahoma win in Fort Worth would send the Sooners to the Fiesta Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl would be choosing between a 10-2 Kansas State team that would have lost its final two regular season games, and a suddenly-resurgent Texas team that would be 9-3 and owning a head-to-head win over the Wildcats. Add in the Longhorns' television drawing power and ticket sales, and the folks in New Orleans would have a difficult decision on their hands.
Regardless of today's outcomes in the Big 12, it does appear as though order has been restored in the BCS with a team from a major conference sitting at the at-large table again.
